Reading the zoning line on a listing
Zoning decides what you can build, park or camp. How to read the code on a listing and where to confirm it with the county.
Every listing prints the county's zoning code as it appears in the assessor's record. The code tells you the minimum lot size for a home, whether an RV can stay and for how long, and whether camping is allowed.
The common codes
- Rural residential (RU, RR, R-A): a home, a well, a septic system. Usually camping and seasonal RV use.
- Agricultural (A, AG): the same, often with animals allowed.
- Estate residential: larger minimum lot sizes; check whether a mobile home is permitted.
Confirm before you build
Zoning changes, and counties read their own codes differently. Call the planning department with the parcel number from the listing; they will tell you what is allowed today. If we do not know something, the listing says so.
